Less math after the trip. More time to enjoy it.

- Split each expense equally, by percentage or exact amount
- 75 currencies and works with no signal
- Settle up with the fewest possible payments

## A great trip ends with everyone square.

One person books the rental, another covers the car, a third puts dinner on a card abroad. In a 2025 Experian survey, over half of Gen Z and millennial travelers said they had a money disagreement with friends on a trip.

### Someone becomes the group’s bank

Whoever booked the house or the flights fronts a big amount and spends the trip trying to remember who owes what.

### Not everyone did everything

One friend arrived on day three, another skipped the boat tour, the couple shared a room. Splitting it all evenly is not fair.

### Currencies and card fees muddle the math

Dollars, euros and pesos in one group chat turn into a spreadsheet nobody wants to open once you are home.

## How it works on the road.

Three steps so nobody comes home with a calculator in hand.

1

### Create a group for the trip

Invite your friends or share the group code. People without the app can be added as participants too.

2

### Add each expense on the spot

Choose who paid, in which currency and who to split it with. Scan the receipt or say the expense out loud.

3

### Settle up without mental math

TakeControl simplifies the settle-up and shows who pays whom, with the fewest possible payments.

## How do you split expenses on a group trip?

Every expense can have its own rule. Pick who took part and how to split it: equally, by percentage or by exact amount.

### Equally among those who joined

The tour goes only to those who went. Dinner, to those at the table.

### By percentage

To split by family or by couple, or when someone stays fewer nights.

### Exact amount

Each person pays for what they ordered, like at a restaurant.

### Example: a vacation rental split by household

A family of 4 and a couple rent a beach house for $3,000. Split by headcount, the family covers 4 of the 6 shares:

Each household’s share

 Family **67%**

 Couple **33%**

Family pays **$2,000**

Couple pays **$1,000**

## Built for what really happens on a trip.

Weak signal, foreign currency, crumpled receipts and a group that would rather be out exploring.

### Works offline

Add expenses on the plane, on a trail or with roaming switched off. The app syncs once you are back online.

### 75 currencies

Each expense stays in the currency it was paid in. With PRO, balances are converted into the group currency.

### Trip budget

Set a daily or total limit for the trip and see how much you have spent, even from the widget.

### Receipts and voice

Snap the receipt to fill in the amount and place, or say the expense and let the app add it.

### Simplified settle-ups

Instead of everyone paying everyone, the app finds the shortest way to get square.

### Friendly reminders

After the trip, send a light reminder to whoever has not settled yet, without calling them out in the group chat.

Available for iOS and Android

## Spreadsheet, group chat or app?

A spreadsheet works until the first expense in another currency or the first activity not everyone joined. In TakeControl, the balance updates with every expense you add.

### Spreadsheet

It works, but someone has to own it.

| Date | Expense | Amount | Split |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1/10 | Beach house | $3,000 | =C2/6 |
| 1/10 | Rental car | $480 | =C3/4 |
| 1/12 | Dinner | €120 | =C4*1.15/5 |

- **Exchange rates by hand**Every foreign expense needs converting.
- **Who joined what**Every exception needs a new formula.
- **Settling up at the end**Someone has to work out who pays whom.

### TakeControl

The trip balance takes care of itself.

![The Italy Trip group in TakeControl, with a total trip budget and the balance between members](https://gettakecontrol.app/assets/travel/takecontrol-travel-en.webp)

- **Automatic balance**Always current for the whole group.
- **Separate currencies**Each expense in the currency it was paid in.
- **Trip budget**Daily or total limit at a glance.

## Questions about splitting travel expenses.

Straight answers to agree on the split before you pack.

What is the best app to split travel expenses?

The best app is the one your group actually uses during the trip. TakeControl is built for that: it works offline, supports 75 currencies, splits each expense equally, by percentage or by exact amount, and shows who owes whom at the end. Before you choose, check that the app lets you split an expense only among the people who took part and that the free plan fits the size of your trip. To compare options, read our guide to the [best expense-splitting apps](https://gettakecontrol.app/en/blog/best-expense-splitting-apps/).

How do you split trip costs with friends fairly?

Agree on the rules before you leave: what counts as shared (lodging, car, groceries) and what is personal (shopping, optional activities). Then add each expense only among the people who took part. That way, nobody pays for a tour they skipped, and whoever paid more gets the difference back when you settle up.

How do we split the rental if someone stays fewer nights?

Split the lodging by night. If the house costs $3,000 for 5 nights and one person stays only 2, they pay their share of those 2 nights and everyone else splits the rest. In TakeControl, you can add the rental by exact amount or by percentage for each person, or add each night as a separate expense.

How do we split expenses paid in another currency?

Add each expense in the currency it was paid in. TakeControl keeps the original amount and, on the PRO plan, shows balances converted into the group currency. If you paid by card, remember that many US cards add a foreign transaction fee, usually between 1% and 3%. Agree whether you will settle on the dollar amount on the statement or on the amount in the local currency.

Does the app work without internet while traveling?

Yes. You can add expenses with no signal, in airplane mode or with roaming switched off, and the app syncs everything once you are back online.

How do we split travel costs with kids?

The most common way is to split by household, not by person. The rental can be split by the number of people in each family, and adult expenses such as drinks only among the adults. In TakeControl, use a percentage split for each family or include only the people who took part in each expense.

Does everyone need to download the app?

No. People without TakeControl can be added as participants, and you add their expenses as usual. When everyone uses the app, each person can follow their own balance in real time.

Does TakeControl send money between people?

No. The app calculates and shows who owes whom, but you pay each other yourselves, with Venmo, Zelle, a bank transfer or cash. Then record the payment in the app to update everyone’s balance.

Is TakeControl free for trips?

You can start for free, with up to 6 groups and up to 8 expenses a day. [TakeControl PRO](https://gettakecontrol.app/en/pricing/) unlocks unlimited entries, automatic currency conversion and no ads.
