Someone becomes the group’s bank
Whoever booked the house or the flights fronts a big amount and spends the trip trying to remember who owes what.
Add every expense as it happens, in any currency and even with no signal. When the trip is over, TakeControl shows who owes whom.

One person books the rental, another covers the car, a third puts dinner on a card abroad. In a 2025 Experian survey, over half of Gen Z and millennial travelers said they had a money disagreement with friends on a trip.
Whoever booked the house or the flights fronts a big amount and spends the trip trying to remember who owes what.
One friend arrived on day three, another skipped the boat tour, the couple shared a room. Splitting it all evenly is not fair.
Dollars, euros and pesos in one group chat turn into a spreadsheet nobody wants to open once you are home.
Three steps so nobody comes home with a calculator in hand.
Invite your friends or share the group code. People without the app can be added as participants too.
Choose who paid, in which currency and who to split it with. Scan the receipt or say the expense out loud.
TakeControl simplifies the settle-up and shows who pays whom, with the fewest possible payments.
Every expense can have its own rule. Pick who took part and how to split it: equally, by percentage or by exact amount.
Weak signal, foreign currency, crumpled receipts and a group that would rather be out exploring.
Add expenses on the plane, on a trail or with roaming switched off. The app syncs once you are back online.
Each expense stays in the currency it was paid in. With PRO, balances are converted into the group currency.
Set a daily or total limit for the trip and see how much you have spent, even from the widget.
Snap the receipt to fill in the amount and place, or say the expense and let the app add it.
Instead of everyone paying everyone, the app finds the shortest way to get square.
After the trip, send a light reminder to whoever has not settled yet, without calling them out in the group chat.
A spreadsheet works until the first expense in another currency or the first activity not everyone joined. In TakeControl, the balance updates with every expense you add.
It works, but someone has to own it.
| Date | Expense | Amount | Split |

The best app is the one your group actually uses during the trip. TakeControl is built for that: it works offline, supports 75 currencies, splits each expense equally, by percentage or by exact amount, and shows who owes whom at the end. Before you choose, check that the app lets you split an expense only among the people who took part and that the free plan fits the size of your trip. To compare options, read our guide to the best expense-splitting apps.
Agree on the rules before you leave: what counts as shared (lodging, car, groceries) and what is personal (shopping, optional activities). Then add each expense only among the people who took part. That way, nobody pays for a tour they skipped, and whoever paid more gets the difference back when you settle up.
Split the lodging by night. If the house costs $3,000 for 5 nights and one person stays only 2, they pay their share of those 2 nights and everyone else splits the rest. In TakeControl, you can add the rental by exact amount or by percentage for each person, or add each night as a separate expense.
Add each expense in the currency it was paid in. TakeControl keeps the original amount and, on the PRO plan, shows balances converted into the group currency. If you paid by card, remember that many US cards add a foreign transaction fee, usually between 1% and 3%. Agree whether you will settle on the dollar amount on the statement or on the amount in the local currency.
Yes. You can add expenses with no signal, in airplane mode or with roaming switched off, and the app syncs everything once you are back online.
The most common way is to split by household, not by person. The rental can be split by the number of people in each family, and adult expenses such as drinks only among the adults. In TakeControl, use a percentage split for each family or include only the people who took part in each expense.
No. People without TakeControl can be added as participants, and you add their expenses as usual. When everyone uses the app, each person can follow their own balance in real time.
No. The app calculates and shows who owes whom, but you pay each other yourselves, with Venmo, Zelle, a bank transfer or cash. Then record the payment in the app to update everyone’s balance.
You can start for free, with up to 6 groups and up to 8 expenses a day. TakeControl PRO unlocks unlimited entries, automatic currency conversion and no ads.
